Quills Woollen Market EST.1938

A Third Generation Family Business

We are extremely proud to be a third-generation Irish family run business, selling quality Irish knitwear and Irish gifts. We are most thankful to our grandfather who started the business in 1938 and passed on his knowledge, commitment and love of authentic Aran knitwear to our father, his brothers and sisters and subsequently to us his grandchildren today.

Making Beautiful Handcrafted Irish Sweaters

Our grandparents Paddy and Nora Quill had 12 children, which was the norm in Irish families at the time. While Nora took care of the children, Paddy set about making beautiful Aran knitwear in the small Gaeltacht of Ballingeary in Co-Cork. Paddy would set out daily to all the local markets selling his Aran sweaters across Ireland from the back of his van. Long before customer service teams and home delivery services were ever heard of, Paddy was making house calls to locals that needed clothing to protect them from the harsh Irish weather. No ask was ever too big for Paddy to fulfil and he soon generated a following of loyal customers nationwide.
The demand got so big that Paddy began employing local knitting ladies around Ireland to make his now popular Aran sweaters.

More About Paddy Quill

An All-Ireland champion in Traditional Irish Music, Paddy was known throughout Ireland for his musical talent. Many customers not only received their orders direct to their doors but would get a personal live Irish music concert too – now that was service. The fiddle and the accordion were Paddy’s great love and many the session was had.

Paddy and Nora’s sons would regularly travel with Paddy to the markets. All six of them - Padraig, Christy, Seamus, Joe, Johnny and Finbarr – were all learning the ropes from an early age and were soon expanding to include Irish wool cardigans, shawls, scarfs, socks and more,in addition to Paddy’s Aran sweaters.

"Quills Woollen Market is to Wool what Disneyland is to amusement parks. No other store matched selection,no-one matched quality and very few matched price"
